Rwanda: Agri Business Coach – Rwanda

Project objectives:

  • New and increased effective, affordable, cost efficient and client centric financial and informational services offered by Financial Institutions (FIs) to Irish Potato small holder farmers (SHFs) to ensure financial inclusion for the poor;
  • Enhanced market position, efficiency and managerial competencies for Irish Potato SFHs and sustained relations with other chain operators (market players);
  • Increased financial literacy, changed positive mind-set towards digitalisation, access and use of digital information, communication, payments, savings and credits (and potential additional services) of SHFs.

It is in this regards that SPARK is hiring Agri Business Coaches to support in empowering the Irish Potato SHF organizations (primary cooperatives, unions and Federation).

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  • The responsibilities and tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Coordinating field activities in the areas of operations.
  • Responsible and accountable for the cooperatives members and farmers capacities development plans.
  • Help with MEL primary data collection through field visits and needs assessment of selected cooperatives.
  • Deliver trainings and coaching plans on the areas of Cooperative Management, Financial Management, Entrepreneurship & Marketing and Access to Finance for cooperatives leaders and all members.
  • Conduct regular proximity coaching session for cooperative members focusing on membership responsibilities and accountability among others topics.
  • Help in the promotion and use of a newly introduced business informational system through mobile phones (USSD) that will be developed to assist farmers to get regular information on the potato business and market dynamics, prices, inputs availability and prices among other relevant information to inform / guise business decisions.
  • Serve as focal point to assist the target cooperatives with the market linkages with other key chain operators to ensure sustained fair relations and business performances (i.e.: supply contracts).
  • Conduct field visits to promote financial literacy and access to digital financing solutions by potato farmers.
  • Ensure a maximum uptake of the digital financing solutions through an intensive promotion and mobilization campaign as well as proximity coaching activities.
  • Submit monthly report which will be reviewed and validated by the project management team (PO, PM) a week before the quarterly planning meeting.
  • Participate to consultation meetings with the project implementation partners or services providers when required.
  • Be the focal points of Spark in the target districts and attend district meetings (I.e.: JADF, Open days) and ensure regular consultations with other local development stakeholders.

Requirements and Skills

  • Experience in project management with international development organisation,
  • Project design, implementation, operations, and organisational restructuring;
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in a field related to Agriculture, agribusiness, agri financing, international development or business administration;
  • Good knowledge and experience in Irish Potato sector value chain development including agri capacity development, agri business development services, rural agri financing and business environment in Rwanda;
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of cooperatives and NGOs operating in agriculture sector in Rwanda;
  • Good oral, written and reporting skills;
  • Knowledge of English and Kinyarwanda;
  • Rwandan Nationality or in possession of work permit.

Recruiting a Research Assistant for IITA

International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is an international non-profit research-for-development (R4D) organization created in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and supported primarily by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). IITA’s R4D is anchored on the development needs of Sub-Saharan Africa and develops agricultural solutions with partners to tackle hunger and poverty by reducing

producer and consumer risks, enhancing crop quality and productivity, and generating wealth from agriculture.

CIAT, on behalf of IITA, is seeking for a Research Assistant to support timely and efficient data collection and reporting in the following two projects in Rwanda Office. The Consortium for Improving Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Central Africa (CIALCA – www.cialca.org) that seeks to improve food, income and nutrition security with the Rwandan government, public and private sector and partners. The second is a project that seeks to work with extension officers and lead farmers for better management of Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW), using (smart) phone and other information and communication technology (ICT). The project will be gathering data on household characteristics, communication needs, ICT-use efficiency, and incidence and severity of the BXW disease in the intervention areas in Rwanda. Main duties and responsibilities include:

1. Research assistance to CIALCA and ICT4BXW projects

  • Assist CIALCA and BMZ scientists and staff in effective data collection using ODK-surveys and tablets, interviews, workshops, participatory observation and other methods.
  • Assist CIALCA and BMZ scientists and staff in basic data cleaning and analysis.
  • Support the implementation and quality control of multi-locational experiments (agronomy, nutrition, economic, social).
  • Support the development and testing of ICT-based tools for extension officers and lead farmers’ decision making.

2. Support training and capacity development

  • Lead training and supervision of data collectors and enumerators;
  • Support the training of agricultural extension officers and lead farmers in the use of smart-phone based tools;Ongoing support and follow up with agricultural extension officers and lead farmers engaged in the program

3. Reporting and administration Assistance:

  • Timely and effectively manage/support administrative and project technical reporting products.
  • Liaise with IITA Rwanda and CIAT staff on administrative issues related to the projects.

The candidate shall have the following competencies, skills and experience:

  • At least a Bachelor degree in Agricultural or other relevant fields with proven data collection and reporting skills.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant work experience in a closely related field gained in an International Organization in Agricultural sector
  • Experience in digital data collection e.g. using tablet-based surveys; and developing and testing mobile (smart) phone applications with extension officers and farmers.
  • High level of computer and ICT skills (MS Office Word and Excel) and ability to learn new applications quickly.
  • Fluent in both spoken and written English and Kinyarwanda. French is an added advantage.
  • Valid driving license will be an added advantage
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties.
  • High level analytical thinking capacity
  • Understanding and experience, working in banana- and cassava-based farming systems.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, good judgment and a high level of respect for confidentiality.
  • Must be proactive and takes initiative, and has an eye for detail and perfection.
  • Willingness to learn and develop as part of the IITA team in Rwanda.

Terms of employment:

The position is nationally recruited, will be based at IITA Offices in Kigali, Rwanda. The contract will be for one (1) year period, subject to a probation period of three (3) months, renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION:                   Communications Officer – Rwanda PHIA, ICAP Rwanda

REPORTS TO:              Project Coordinator – Rwanda PHIA, ICAP Rwanda

LOCATION:                  Kigali, Rwanda

POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Officer is responsible for leading the coordination and mobilization of various stakeholders and local communities to actively participate in the Rwanda Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (RPHIA).

This position is grant funded.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES
Mobilization and Sensitization

  • Coordinate and ensure implementation of the RPHIA communications strategy, including mobilization at national, zonal, district and community levels.
  • Inform and coordinate community mobilization activities by working with the local survey implementing partner and other local stakeholders to:
  • Develop SOPs and tools for community entry procedures survey team feedback and responses to community reactions;
  • Ensure implementation of community entry procedures and community sensitization via local institutions;
  • Manage and respond to community level reactions.
  • Mobilize communities including the targeted eligible respondents to participate in RPHIA.
  • Liaise and work in close collaboration with community groups and volunteer networks, including Health Surveillance Teams, Community Development Assistants, HIV and AIDS support groups, City, District and Sector leaders, traditional and religious leaders, Area Development Committees, Village Development Committees, to encourage communities including the eligible respondents to participate in RPHIA.

Communication

  • Adapt RPHIA messages to the local context; polish and translate messages into local languages such as Kinyarwanda, etc.
  • Work with local stakeholders to develop, write, lay out, produce and distribute a range of key materials, including but not limited to: press releases, briefs to policy makers and national and regional leaders, brochures for participant recruitment, radio spots and jingles, banners and posters, survey team t-shirts.
  • Ensure compliance with established branding strategy, correct logo placement, and donor and partner recognition on all communications.
  • Lead an effective media engagement strategy, including writing and distributing press releases, feature articles, opinion pieces, and similar materials.

Coordination

  • Liaise and work in close collaboration with the RPHIA Project Coordinator, Laboratory Advisor, Procurement and Logistics Officer, and the Community Mobilization Sub-Committee, and survey teams including partners.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships, networking, as well as collaboration with government departments, city, district and sector leaders, traditional and religious leaders, and targeted eligible respondents at the national, district or sector, and village levels.
  • Facilitate and participate in the organization of the RPHIA national launch and events.
  • Facilitate and participate in the development and implementation of the mobilization action implementation plans and budget forecasts.
  • Participate in budget analysis and expenditure monitoring in line with the approved activities and budget forecasts.
  • Prepare, review, and submit the progress reports, and other documentation that may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Social Sciences, HIV and AIDS, Community and Rural Development, Education, Mass Communication or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum 5 years practical experience in any of the following areas: HIV and AIDS programming, message development, community mobilization, civic education, community and rural development, etc.

REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Excellent knowledge of Rwandese context and cultures in urban and rural areas.
  • Excellent knowledge of local media and local sensitivities.
  • Proven experience leading communications for a public health program or campaign
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (written and spoken) skills in English as well as relevant local languages such as Kinyarwanda, etc.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and successfully manage multiple assignments concurrently.
  • Ability to problem-solve and work as a team member with leadership skills for coaching and developing others.

Required qualifications, competences and experience

  • Bachelor or master degree in economics, business administration or engineering
  • Knowledge of Rwandan economy and development strategies
  • Rwandan national with knowledge of Germany and German economy, studies in Germany an advantage
  • Fluency in oral and written English, good knowledge of German, French desirable
  • Very good working knowledge of ICT technologies (MS Office, internet, email)
  • Very good communication skills, networking and organizing abilities
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently, conceptual skills

Full or Partial Scholarships at Transparency International School

Transparency International School is offering a limited number of full or partial scholarships to senior students, graduates and young professionals under the age of 35. Scholarships will be awarded for a seven days TI School course in the field of anti-corruption and accountability.
Transparency International School on Integrity (TISI) is an annual state-of-the-art anti-corruption and accountability training for future leaders. The upcoming TISI 2018 will take place during 4-10 July, 2018 in Vilnius, Lithua
nia. TISI exposes its participants to the latest developments in the field of anti-corruption and accountability and offers real opportunities to try and implement their ideas in practice.

Scholarship Description:

  • Application Deadline: Deadline for scholarship applications is 1 May 2018, for non-scholarship applications – 20 May 2018.
  • Course Level: Scholarships are available for senior students, graduates and young professionals.
  • Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded for TI School course. The School features three teaching modules that cover the public sector, the private sector and civic empowerment. Each module will include the theoretical definition of corruption as it affects that particular part of society, and an explanation and demonstration of how anti-corruption tools are used in practice.
  • Scholarship Award: The course fee covers tuition fee, course material, accommodation, meals and extra-curricular activities. The fee for TISI 2018 is EUR 650.
  • Number of Scholarships: Not given
  • Nationality: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Iceland, Latvia, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Turkey and Ukraine

  • Entrance Requirements: The School is open to senior students, graduates and young professionals under the age of 35. We welcome individuals from public, private, non-governmental and academic sectors, from all academic backgrounds. TI School does not discriminate its applicants on the grounds of race, color, national origin, disability, sex, gender identity, religion, political beliefs, marital, familial or parental status, sexual orientation or any other basis.
  • English Language Requirements: Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.
